Present Tense

Verb

-is a word that expresses action or state of being.

The Three Classes of Verbs
1. Transitive verb – requires an object.
2. Intransitive verb – does not require an object.
3. Copulative verb – expresses a state of being. It is a link to a subject with a predicate noun, a predicate pronoun or a predicate adjective.

Roger is a supervisor. (pronoun)
He smells perfume. (object)
Roger speaks politely. (no object)
Tense – denotes the time of action, telling whether the action has taken place, is taking
place or will take place.

Present Tense

- is used to express habitual action, present sate of being, general truth, permanent condition, to summarize a story, to tell future event, or togive directions.
- when the subject is plural the simple form of the verb is used.
- when the subject is singular, add s or es to the base form of the verb.

1. Roxanne waters the garden everyday. (habitual action – with time expression)
2. The sun rises from the east. (general truth)
3. They are the science scholars. (present state of being)
4. The Philippines lies in the eastern hemisphere. (permanent condition)
5. An old woman comes at the height of the storm and borrows the oil lamp. (summary of a story)
6. Boil the checken. Separate the broth in a bowl.
