Parts of Speech

INTRODUCTION

What is a sentence?
It is a group of words that expresses a thought. Each word has a function so as to express a thought. Each word has its own classification. We call this PARTS OF SPEECH
.

The Eight Parts of Speech
Noun      Pronouns     Adjectives         Verbs            Adverbs              Prepositions                                   Conjunctions               Interjection

1. Nouns are the names of a thing; eg. book, boy, house, dog.
a) The dog runs fast.
b) She reads book everyday.
c) Eloisa lives in a beautiful house.

2. Pronouns are words to substitute a noun; eg. he, she, him, her, they, we, who, I, you, it.
a) She lives in beautiful house.
b) They work as a team.
c) We want to learn the English Language.
d) Alfred, may I borrow you book.

3. Adjectives are words that describe or modify the a noun or pronoun; eg. big, small, great, beautiful, second, soft, hard.
a) Abraham Lincoln is one of the greatest American figure.
b) He works hard everyday.
c) She is beautiful.

4. Verbs are words that express an action. These are the action words. eg. walk, jump, climb, rest, sleep, run.
a) Peter runs fast.
b) The dog barks so loud.
c) The baby sleeps well.

5. Adverb are words that modifies a verb, an adjective, or another adverb. eg. quickly, very soon, well, ugly.
a) Roxanne is very pretty.
b) They slept early this evening.
c) Dorothy speaks English fluently.

6. Prepositions are words that show relation between a noun or a pronoun and another word in the sentence. eg. into, for, from, at, in, over, on.
a) John ran into the house.
b) Johnny lives in the house near the lake.
c) I like her best of all my friend.

7. Conjunctions are words that join words or group of words in a sentence. eg. as, and, or, if, while, although.
a) I entered the laboratory room when I heard the bell.
b) She doesn’t sing, but she dance.
c) You must study your lessons or your will fail.

8. Interjections are words that emotions, and has a little or no grammatical connection with the rest of the sentence. eg. oh, ouch, alas.
a) Oh! the house is burning.
b) Ouch! You stepped on me.

Let as try to analyze the word good in this sentences.

1. The good are rewarded. (noun)
2. He is a good boy. (adjective)
3. His is as good as you. (conjunction)
4. He has come home for good. (adverb)

“Fire!” shouted the big boy as he jumped awkwardly over the fence

This sentence illustrates the different parts of speech.
Noun:                        boy, fence
Pronoun:                    he
Verbs:                       shouted, jumped
Adjectives:                big, high
Adverb:                    awkwardly
Preposition:              as
Interjection:              Fire!

Three small boy crept silently to the kitchen and opened it.

Boys and kitchen are nouns – they are names of thins.
It is a pronoun standing for the noun kitchen.
Three and small are adjectives modifying the noun boys.
The is an adjective (article modifying the noun kitchen.)
Crept and opened are verbs – they tell what the boys did.
Silently is an adverb modifying the word crept. It describes the manner of their creeping.
To is a preposition – it shows the relation of the noun kitchen to the verb crept.
And is a conjunction connecting the verbs crept and opened.
